Hugh MacLennan on Canada

I recently read MacLennan's Two Solitudes. Here are a couple good lines:

"...people seemed so constructed that they were unable to use ideas as instruments to discover truth, and waved them instead like flags."

"Yes, McQueen thought with satisfaction, we have discovered a great social secret in Canada. We have contrived to solve problems which would ruin other countries merely by ignoring their existence."
